The original Sweetwater opened in 1972 as a 90-seat Mill Valley tavern and spent the next four decades building a reputation as one of America's great small music rooms. Jerry Garcia, Elvis Costello, Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt, and John Lee Hooker all played the cramped stage, and the Times of London once named it among the best nightclubs in America. After closing in 2007, the venue reopened in 2012 as Sweetwater Music Hall in the renovated ground floor of Mill Valley's Masonic Temple with an expanded 300-person capacity. The walls are lined with photos from the old room, connecting five decades of Marin County music history.
