The Civic Theatre at 510 O'Keefe Avenue is believed to be the oldest surviving theater in New Orleans, originally built in 1906 as the Shubert Theatre by architect Sam Stone as one of the city's first "fireproof" masonry-and-steel performance halls. Over its varied life, the Beaux Arts venue hosted vaudeville, burlesque, musicals, and disco before falling into neglect. A meticulous 2011 renovation preserved the building's architectural character while installing state-of-the-art audio-visual technology and a hydraulic flooring system that allows the 1,200-seat room to shift between multiple configurations. The result is a versatile space that now hosts concerts, film screenings, and corporate events, blending 120 years of theatrical history with modern production capability.
