Established in 1959 when Laura and Webo Vaughan converted a corner store into a neighborhood bar, Vaughan's Lounge has anchored the corner of Dauphine and Lesseps in the Bywater for over six decades. The bar became a musical landmark when Kermit Ruffins launched his legendary Thursday night residency with the Barbecue Swingers, an 18-year run that put this intimate 9th Ward dive on the international jazz map. Since 2011, Corey Henry and the Treme Funktet have carried the Thursday night torch, keeping the room packed with locals and adventurous visitors drawn to raw, unfiltered New Orleans brass and funk in a no-frills setting.
