Yoshi's began in 1973 as a 25-seat sushi bar in North Berkeley, founded by Yoshie Akiba and two friends. By the late 1970s, the restaurant had moved to a larger Claremont Avenue space and started hosting live jazz. In 1997 it relocated to a purpose-built, 310-seat concert hall and 250-seat Japanese restaurant at Jack London Square, backed by Oakland Redevelopment Agency funding. The 17,000-square-foot complex has since become one of the premier jazz clubs on the West Coast, hosting artists from Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny to contemporary acts pushing the genre's boundaries.
