A North Beach dive opened in 1861, The Saloon is reputed to be San Francisco's oldest bar still operating in its original location, having survived the 1906 earthquake and fire that leveled the surrounding blocks. The narrow Grant Avenue room is dim and built around a long mahogany bar; sawdust on the floor, cash-only, low cover, no pretense. Live blues plays seven nights a week with weekend matinees, drawing a rotating cast of Bay Area regulars — Mark Hummel, Daniel Castro, Jinx Jones, the Lisa Kindred Band, and a who's-who of the local circuit.
