Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro has been the anchor of Frenchmen Street's music scene since 1983, when owner George Brumat transformed the former Faubourg club into a dedicated modern jazz listening room at 626 Frenchmen Street. The intimate, brick-walled space -- housed in a building dating to the 1800s -- seats roughly 100 in its music room, where a cover charge and attentive audience create the atmosphere of a true concert hall. Pianist Ellis Marsalis held a legendary Friday-night residency here beginning in the mid-1980s, and the club has since hosted nearly every significant name in New Orleans jazz. The New York Times has called it "the classiest jazz club in New Orleans," and Rolling Stone designated it a "musical landmark." A full Creole bistro menu rounds out the experience, making Snug Harbor equal parts supper club and shrine.
