The Warfield opened as a vaudeville theater in 1922 and has been hosting live entertainment for over a century. The ornate interior features marble columns, a grand staircase, and a hand-painted mural above the proscenium by Albert Herter. Capacity is around 2,250, with a general admission floor and seated balcony. Bob Dylan's 14-show run in 1979 transformed the theater into a rock venue, and the Grateful Dead made it their home throughout the 1980s. Jerry Garcia performed here 88 times with various projects. Today the venue books major touring acts across genres, managed by AEG. The intimacy of the room, despite its size, makes it a favorite for both artists and audiences. The Downtown location provides easy transit access. For mid-sized shows with historic atmosphere, it remains one of the best rooms in the city.
